FIREWORKS LIGHT UP LAKE
CHARLES
East Farewell – The sky over Lake Charles was exploding Sunday
as the town’s 4th of July celebration came to a dazzling climax.
Many families brought their beach chairs down to the Lakefront Plaza and beach
and many others watched from surrounding shore points. Many people also
gathered at the Fun Pier which had a magnificent view. The display started
around 8:30 and was managed by the East Farewell Fire Department-Police with
assistance from the regional National Guard. They based their launch point a
few hundred yards west of the Lakefront Plaza beach but were not in contact
with the beach.
This year many
out of towners made the trek to see the display and Main
Street and Lakeshore Drive were filled with parked cars. This year a team
of volunteers made their way through the crowds soliciting contributions to
help pay for the event. It was later reported the $840.00 was raised. Many of
the out of towners also dined at one of the several cafes set up outside the
different restaurants and bars along Main
Street and Lake Shore Drive.
The display
lasted about 15 minutes and was accompanied by music from the Regional High
School Summer Band Ensemble. Many people who have houses bordering the lake
also set of smaller fireworks that complimented the main display. “It was a
beautiful night and the display went off as expected. I couldn’t be happier,”
said Tom Connelly, ubiquitous Town Council President.
The display was
talked about becoming an annual event and although there was never a proper
proclamation it appears to have become one.

TRAVELERS BARELY BEAT MINERS IN A SLUGFEST
Slate Mountain – The Slate Mountain
Stadium must be one of the most beautiful stadiums in the East. From its arched
brick and steel façade that wraps a perfectly manicured ballfield; it is the
pride of the town and worth a visit by any baseball aficionado. The evening
game started with a soft breeze to right and the stands were packed.
The
Travelers started off hot, jumping on Miners pitcher, Ben Daley, with Francis
hitting a first pith single. Dunham looped a ball to center for an out but
Watson was able drive a long ball into the right corner and scored Francis.
Johnny Cloos came up and was aiming for the wall but ended up dropping a
Texas-leaguer into right for a single but scoring Watson. Much to Daily’s
relief Dimero went for a high outside pitch and grounded it to shortstop, Will
McCarthy, who turned it into a double play. The Travelers had an early 2-0
lead.
Traveler’s
pitcher, Joey Alfred, took the mound with confidence and struck out the first
Miner. He went on to retire the next two batters and end the first inning
without a mark. That was the end of the pleasure cruise. The Miners came to
life in the second, scoring four runs with four hits including one homerun. The
Travelers did not rollover though; they came back in the third with four more
runs and then again in the fourth they scored three more. The Slugfest
continued as the Miners tacked on three more in the fourth and three in the
fifth. Things started to settle down by the sixth inning, the Travelers were
leading 9-7. In the seventh the Miners were able to grab two more scores off a
rare error by outfielder Ralph Francis. Francis was able to redeem himself, somewhat;
in the eighth inning he smacked a three run homer that put the Travelers up
12-7. The Miners weren’t finished, though, they scored three runs in the eighth
and in the bottom of the ninth they scored one more bringing the score to12-11,
Travelers. A very weary Joey Alfred showed great drive and perseverance to
strike out the final Miner, Jeb Bale, and give the Travelers a well fought for
but very tiring win, 12-11.
The
Travelers will cruse into Beer Creek next week on their way home. The game will
begin at 1:05 Saturday in Beer Creek Memorial Park.
