BAR-B-QUE COOKOFF SMOKES UP LAKEFRONT PLAZA

East Farewell- The sixth annual Lakefront Bar-B-Que cook-off took place over the weekend. This year 17 “big” grillers, including two new down south, joined with 25 “small” grillers on beautiful Lakefront Plaza under a clear August afternoon. Within fifteen minutes the beautiful, clear afternoon had turned into a smoky, sweet smelling, wonderful haze that was enjoyed by the many, many B-B-Q aficionados. The main show was the “big” grillers who set up entire booths with picnic tables and seats along with “fixin’ bars” with fixings and utensils. They also took on bigger challenges, one out of state griller, Big Davey from Fayetteville, North Carolina, worked a whole pig on a spit. He actually started the cooking 12 hours earlier and was really just smoking and finishing it off when the cook-off started. Another “big” griller was local and last year’s winner, Al Davis from the Lost Oasis. This year he added to his now famous baby back ribs with his Uncle Ray’s secret family recipe sauce by smoking brisket. The “small” grillers were more varied in their menus. The only official products being judged were ribs, pork, brisket and chicken but many of the “small” grillers threw on burgers, steaks and in three different cases some fish. No matter what the dish the grills were hot and smoky and the smells were fabulous.
The Plaza was filled with cooks, helpers and folks just hanging around hoping for some tasty treats sort of like the way the dog begs at the kitchen table and it was said that some even tried the sad-eyed look to get some scraps. Unfortunately, this year the Travelers were out of town. Almost every year the Travelers are guest judges and all around local celebrities that mingle with the crowd, sample the fare and judge the competition. They were sorely missed this year. The judges were picked from other local business and civic positions.  This year judges were local chef, Lara Driscoll, war vet and local businessman, Ralph Dimaio and the ever-present and always available Town Council President Tom Conally.
The judging started promptly at 4:15. The judges told the grillers to start bringing their creations up to the judging table. The order presentation was decided earlier by lottery. The first presenter was previous winner Jimmy Drake who brought his famous, award winning short ribs that were spicy hot and caramelized on a bed of greens and corn. In between each griller the judges would confer with each other and take some time to cleanse their palates by drinking some water and wiping their fingers. The visiting southern grillers provided a lot of spice with their ribs varying between rubs and sauces all were very well received by the judges. The “big” grillers presented much more elaborate dishes, probably due to their greater experience, but the “small” grillers showed a certain local flair and “nothing to lose” attitude with their presentations.
The final judging and final decisions did not come until almost 6:00PM due to the long list of entrants and the judges need to take a small break in the middle for personal reasons. They had to get up and walk off some of the wonderful fare. This year’s winner was declared at 6:03PM by a unanimous vote, recent Regional High graduate Missy Waller took home first place with her baby back ribs drenched in sauce. She also entered her renowned brisket that won second place last year. This year her ribs wowed the judges who may have been somewhat partial to the local sauce as opposed to the out of town rubs and sauces. Miss Waller has opened a restaurant on Lakeshore Drive just this summer and it has been very popular. Jimmy Drake came in second with his well-known ribs and third place went out of towner, Big Davey, for his roasted pig. “Ya-all have a real friendly town here. Everyone I talked to was real nice and they all were askin’ about my set up and the kind of wood I was usin’, they really wanted to know, too,” said Big Davey when asked for his thoughts about his visit “up north”.
All the grillers stayed long into the evening and the crowds all hung around, too. Many people had brought small tables and chairs to lounge around the Plaza and enjoy all the wonderful food. A whole group of on lookers descended on the plaza after dark, many had come from the beaches and many others were just heading into town for Saturday night in East Farewell but all were looking for some last samplings as the grillers broke down and most gave away their cooked products for free.

TRAVELERS STAY HOT ON THE ROAD

Bear Creek – The Travelers rolled into Bear Creek riding on a five game winning streak. Although several players had expressed dismay that they were missing the East Farewell Bar-B-Que Cookoff they took it in stride and shutout the Cubs 5-0 on a beautiful summer night. The Cubs were missing their biggest slugger, Nick Doyle, due to a cut hand. The Cubs missed his bat as they were unable to generate any real offense, only getting 4 hits off an excellent Joe Nagy. Nagy’s superior performance probably had more to do with the win than the absence of Doyle. He threw four perfect innings and three that had only five batters, very impressive indeed.
On the other side the Travelers have been hitting the ball very well. They got a total of 11 hits, 1 homerun, a triple, four doubles and five singles. Johnny Cloos was able to forget about his missing the rib judging to clobber a low outside fastball out of the park. The Travelers defense was able to shut down the Cubs offense even further by turning two double plays, too.
The Travelers travel to Ondita to face the Cougars and their pitching ace, Sam “Cat” Caterno. The Cougars are currently tied with the Travelers in the league standings so this could be a very decisive game. It starts at 1:30PM at the Ondita Ballpark.

3RD ANNUAL GOLF TOURNAMENT IS A BIG HIT

East Farewell – The 3rd annual East Farewell Golf Tournament took place over the weekend and drew a very large crowd that had many locals as well as many out of towners. The tournament had several big names present. Ken Venturi, Tommy Bolt and Doug Ford were on hand and local pros Will Heart and Art Fox were on the tees. Golf legend Bobby Jones, who helped designed the course was on hand for the opening and officially opened the tournament. Once again Town Council president, Tom Conally and local businessman Charles Wentz from the Lost Oasis as well as many of the members of the Reese Farms Club rounded out the field.
The tournament started on Friday and in a new, more extended format this year, each foursome played six rounds. This was increased from last year’s four rounds each. The heat was again a factor this year prompting many to suggest that the whole tournament be moved to earlier in the year. Traditionally, “golf season” has been in the spring with the playing of the Masters and the US Open. One reason the East Farewell Tournament has been scheduled in August is because of the huge spectator turnout with all the families visiting for vacation. Surprisingly, most of the criticism has come from the fans, most of the players have not commented either way. Regardless, the tournament has taken place in August for the last three years and club president, Jim Gauge says there is no consideration of it being changed.
The heat did not seem to have any effect on the players and the course was in excellent condition thanks to the loving care from head grounds master, Stanley Pupeck. The greens were fast and clean and the fairways were wide and very lush.
Ken Venturi took an early lead with a -5 followed by Ford with a -4 in the first round. Tommy Bolt came on strong in the final round scoring a record -7 and it ended up with a three playoff between Bolt and Ford. Doug Ford was able to clinch the win with a magnificent 20 foot putt on the last hole of the playoff. Local winner was Earl Grant coming in with a -1 and the first hole in one in course history on the third hole in the third round, amazing.
The crowd was very respectful but the enormous numbers made for a tight fit around the course and several times the crowds were parted with errant shots by players. Everything was taken in stride and there were no incidences. The tournament once again was a big hit and will probably remain a summer attraction for years to come.

TRAVELERS START LONG ROAD TRIP WITH A WIN

Albany – The Travelers have started their longest road trip in six years and they came up with a win against the Albany Senators, 6-4 on Saturday. The win on the road was a good sign for the Travelers and extend their winning streak to five and push them back into a third place tie with Monticello. Winning on the road is going to be needed if the Travelers have any hope of climbing back into the pennant race.
Billy Green took the mound on Saturday and pitched a very strong game giving up only 4 runs, 6 hits (one homer), 3 walks and a hit batter. The offense was consistent throughout the game evenly spreading out the scoring with two runs in the second, on in the fourth and fifth and two in the eighth. Dale Dunham has quietly put together a six game hitting streak and was able to come up with two on Saturday including a RBI in the eighth. Johnny Cloos added to his homerun totals with another blast in the second, driving in two runs. On the Senators side pitcher, Dave Parelli, pitched a good game allowing seven hits but was hampered by a lackluster defense that gave up four errors accounting for three Travelers runs. Senator slugger Frank Gentile crushed one of Green’s mistakes that brought a little life into the team’s offense but was not enough to push them over the top.
The Travelers move on to Bear Creek next week in a night game with the Cubs. The game brings at 7:05PM in the Cubs ballpark. The Cubs are currently in fourth place but their big slugger, Nick Doyle, has been sidelined with a cut hand and is questionable to play next week.

HOT DOG EATING CONTEST CANCELLED

East Farewell – The summer event that had almost become a tradition has been cancelled this year. The nearly famous summer event that drew many fans and a whole lot of flies and ants, the hot dog eating contest, has been cancelled this year due to lack of sponsorship. Local meat packer, L. Myers and Sons and Nathan’s from New York City have sponsored the event for the past three years but this year Myers and Sons is experiencing some business setbacks and Nathan’s has decided to pull out and move their sponsorship to a contest that is starting in its hometown of Coney Island, New York. There had been some rumors that the Coney Island contest got the idea from the East Farewell event when they saw the huge success that was generated by the contest and decided to bring it back to Coney Island. There is little doubt that it will be a huge success there.
Unfortunately for East Farewell, the pull out of Nathan’s and the financial woes of Myers spelled the end of a fun and unique summer event that had grown more in legend than in reality. Tales of the first three events are still being told around the local taverns and dinner tables. It seems the stories far exaggerate the real truths of the event. The crowds’ size has doubled and the number of entrants has blossomed from the 30 that was the cap for the last two years to 50 or more in some tales. The total amount of hotdogs consumed also grew, last year’s winner, Dave O’Hara ate 50 and the Bernie Wilson, 1955’s winner held the record at 51. Different accounts have the total at 75 and 85. Everyone has their own version, but the winners have repeatedly set the records straight.
Town Council president, Tom Conally, made an announcement on Tuesday after the cancellation saying that there would be an effort to bring the contest back next summer but would not elaborate. Many townspeople had different suggestions on how to bring the contest back ranging from the town sponsoring the event to trying to find a new supplier of hot dogs. There is no consensus and for now the event will remain a happy footnote in the town’s history.

TRAVELERS WINNING STREAK INTACT

East Farewell – The Travelers were able to extend their winning streak with a solid win over the surging Monticello Vikings on Saturday, 6-2. The Vikings had been on their own winning streak up until last Saturday, they had won four in a row and nine out of their last ten games. They were holding onto a very respectable third place in the league. This is an enormous improvement over their disastrous inaugural season going an abysmal 13 – 47.
The Travelers were able to get off to another great start, a common beginning throughout their current streak, by scoring 3 runs in the first and two in the third. Singles were the hit of choice for the Travelers in this game racking up eleven in the first six innings. The entire lineup joined in the fun with pitcher Danny Lane getting two singles, one in the second and one in the fifth, and driving in two runs. The other runs were all scored by singles working the base runners around. A rare statistic was achieved by the Travelers on Saturday, every member of the starting lineup had a hit and almost all were singles, very rare indeed.
The Vikings were frustrated by an excellent performance by Lane. Allowing only seven hits and four walks he was able tame the big hitting Vikings and keep them to two runs both scored in the sixth. It was an unusual slump for the team that has been riding high scoring at least seven runs in the last ten games. “We couldn’t get started today. Lane had our number but we are not going to let this stop us, we are going to come back strong next week,” said Vikings manager Dave Murry after the game.
The Travelers take to the road next week to start an extended road trip, harkening back to the early days of the team when they did not have a home stadium and played most of their games on the road (hence their name, Travelers). They will visit Albany and spend the next six weeks on the road. The game next week will be in the Senators Stadium beginning at 1:30PM.

SWIM ACROSS THE LAKE HAS CLOSE CALL

East Farewell - The 3rd annual Swim Across The Lake had a close call on Saturday that has prompted changes in the rules, eligibility and monitoring. The very popular event has grown each year and this year there were over 125 entrants and a record 80 racers started at the cannon’s boom. Race founder’s Hugh Reston and Frank Dunlap were once again in the driver’s seat for this event. They supervised all the prerace advertising, established the four different signup spots throughout town, and took care of manning those spots. They also organized the setup of the swim lanes and organizing the flotilla of spectator and first-aid boats that lined the lanes. This year those boats played a very important part of the race when the youngest swimmer, Joey Sewell, began to struggle about half way across the lake. First-aid boat #4 manned by registered life guards Hal Feldman and Steve Ross quickly steered to the edge of the lane where Ross leapt into the water and grabbed the flailing Sewell. Feldman brought the small boat right into the lane and hauled Sewell in helped by Ross. Once in the boat Feldman was able to administer mouth to mouth resuscitation while Ross headed the boat back to shore where Sewell was attended to by Dr. Cashman and the onsite medical team also recruited by Dunlap and Reston. Sewell was treated and released to his family.
The race was not affected by Ross and Feldman’s heroics only two other swimmers were close to Sewell when got into trouble. The rest of the group was spread across the lake. Once again Raleigh Beach was the finish line and Frank Logan, president of N.U.D.E., was on the beach, surprisingly, wearing a bathing suit and greeting the swimmers. The beach is owned by the N.U.D.E. organization, a local nudist group that has a retreat five miles down the road. Mr. Logan is not only the president of N.U.D.E. he is also the de-facto community interaction representative for the organization. He represents the organization when interaction with the “outside community is needed.
The large group of swimmers this year made for a very crowded field but in the end one winner. The 2.7 miles were covered by David Wilson, 22, a college student and member of the school’s swim team. Wilson is a summer resident and his family has been coming to Lake Charles for many years. He has swum in every race but this is the first time he even came in in the first ten. He made the crossing in a record 1 hour 29 minutes. He broke Robbie Jenkins record by a minute. The female winner was Joan Early last year’s runner up. She finished with a personal best of 1 hour 32 minutes. Race founders Dunlap and Reston finish very respectfully at fifth and eighth (Dunlap, Reston). Out of the 80 racers that started 62 finished, crowding Raleigh Beach to capacity and causing Mr. Logan to try to herd the group onto the road back to the Lakefront Plaza and away from any inquiring eyes.  The participants eventually made their way back to the Lakefront Plaza and there was an informal ceremony where ribbons were awarded for first second and third place.
Young Sewell’s predicament brought about some proposed changes to the requirements for entry to the race Reston and Dunlap announced on the Lakefront Plaza after the ceremony. The exact changes have yet to be defined but the age is going to be raised and a swimming requirement will be put in place. Both Dunlap and Reston were extremely relieved the young Sewell was not seriously injured and were very thankful to both Mr. Ross and Mr. Feldman for their quick thinking and fast action.
Next year’s race may have a different look but it is expected to be just as much fun. If trends continue there will have to be even wider lanes and a larger ending beach.

TRAVELERS GROUND EAGLES

East Farewell – The Travelers extended their winning streak on Saturday when they brought the high flying Erie Eagles down to earth with a 5-1 thumping. The score could have been worse for the Eagles but after the Travelers scored their fifth run in the fifth the Eagles put in reliever Joe Galliano who was able to stop the run scoring machine. Galliano was able to pitch four scoreless innings and allowed only three hits.
The Travelers were able to do all their damage in the first five innings with big blasts by Johnny Cloos and Dale Dunham. Both homers were multiple run drives and accounted for all the Traveler’s runs. The Travelers were able to capitalize on several singles and work the offense to set themselves up for their big hitters. The defense was also outstanding. They were able to turn three double plays and keep the Eagles off base, stymieing any possible offensive threat.
The home stand has been good for the Travelers, winning all three games played during the home stand. They have one more home game before they start an extended road trip though the late mid-season. Next week the Travelers will host the Monticello Vikings beginning at 1:30 in the ballpark. The Vikings are starting to show strong signs of improvement after their disastrous debut season and are now right in the middle of the pack in league standings.

NAUTILUS SAILS UNDER THE NORTH POLE – MEANY CALLS FOR TEAMSTER REVOLT – MILLER VERDICT OVERTURNED – HOUSE INCREASES SOCIAL SECURITY BY 7%

The White House discloses that the Nautilus, the world’s first nuclear-powered submarine has crossed the top of the world, traveling below the arctic icecap. The sub cruised arctic some 400 feet below the surface. The feat was disclosed at a White House ceremony where President Eisenhower awarded the ship’s commander, Comdr. William Anderson, the nation’s highest peacetime decoration.

President George Meany calls on “honest and decent” elements in the teamsters Union to rebel against Union Chief James R. Hoffa and throw him out of office. At the same time, Meany condemned any alliances between AFL-CIO member organizations and the Teamsters.

The U.S. court of appeals overturns the conviction and orders a judgment of acquittal for playwright Arthur Miller, husband of Marilyn Monroe. The case grew out of Miller’s refused to tell the House Committee on Un-American Activities in 1956, the names of Communist writers with whom he acknowledged attending meetings in 1947. Marilyn Monroe celebrated with a champagne breakfast and a long telephone call to her mate.

The House approves a bill to raise the Social Security checks of 11,800 beneficiaries by 7%.

FERRIS WHEEL GETS STUCK ON FUN PIER

East Farewell – It was the worst possible breakdown that could have occurred. The most prestigious ride on the Fun Pier, the 150 foot tall Ferris wheel, got stuck in mid ride last Sunday. The disaster was compounded by the fact that it occurred during the height of the summer season with the Pier packed with patrons. The event happened at 7:30PM when wheel operator, Jason Reynolds, routinely started the wheel on an apparently normal ride. The wheel was not completely full, Reynolds estimated it to be about 60% full which is customary for the time and day. After he engaged the wheel it started and within 30 seconds he knew there was a problem. “I heard a grinding that was not right and then there was a bang and a screech and then it stopped. I saw some smoke coming from the power box so I immediately killed the circuit. That stopped the wheel dead. I ran to the box with a fire extinguisher and was able to open it. It was full of smoke but there was no fire I could see, I spray the extinguisher anyway and that cleared out the smoke. I saw the belts were all busted up and I knew I was going to need some help,” said Reynolds later.
The Wheel was stuck with about 25 people on it, the very top basket was full of teenagers and several of the other baskets had families, children and one had an infant. Needless to say, the Police and Fire departments’ were called and arrived quickly. At first the Fun Pier was not closed down but the Ferris wheel was roped off. Once the scene was accessed the entire Pier was closed down much to the dismay of many people. The Fire Department has a latter extension truck but it only rises to 60 feet. The truck was pulled alongside the wheel and the lower baskets were able to be rescued. The baskets on the top half of the wheel, six baskets total, had people in three of them. System engineers were on site, Conner Farrell and Edwin Parnell began work on the power box almost immediately after the accident occurred. Two hours after the accident Farrell and Parnell were able to rig up a manual crank of sorts and with the help of the winch on the back of the ladder truck were able to slowing crank the wheel and almost miraculously move the wheel around slowly and bring the upper baskets down to earth. Thankfully, there were no injuries and only a few tears. All the riders were looked at by medics on the site and all were able to walk away. Perhaps a little shaken but all in one piece.
“We have to give enormous credit to the Fire Department and the Police for all the work they did. And a great thanks to Collen and Edward for figuring out the manual assist. I would like to publically apologize to all our guests and try to assure them that this was a very, very, almost unheard of occurrence and we are very sorry for any inconvenience, fear or pain that may have occurred,” said Fun Pier owner, Hugh Lendel, grandson of Fun Pier builder Sid Lendel.
The Ferris wheel was closed down, obviously but after the rest of the Fun Pier opened for business as usual on Tuesday at 12 noon. All rides had been inspected and all amusements, arcade games and the like had been reviewed and recertified by State officials. Lendel would not give a timetable out as to when he expects the Ferris wheel to be repaired. “It will be done as soon as possible, but we have to get the best manufacturers engineers here for analysis and repair of the wheel. Nothing but the best, no cost will be spared,” said Lendel in an interview on Monday morning.

TRAVELERS WELD STEELERS IN THE SUMMER NIGHT

East Farewell – The evening fell on East Farewell on Saturday and the lights came on in Travelers Park. Night games are showing up much more this season, especially in the mid –summer. Last year there were only three this year there will be six. Saturday’s was the first. It is a beautiful scene with the field washed in the light and the evening sky slowly yielding to the dark of night. The game was sold out long ago, before the Travelers slipped into their disheartening losing streak that they only recently have been able to pull themselves out of with a two game win streak. The Travelers wanted to build on that momentum and they accomplished that goal with flying colors on Saturday night. The Travelers were able to dominate the Youngstown Steelers, 10-2.
The game started off well for the Travelers as pitcher, Joey Alfred, was able to retire the side, three up three down. The Traveler’s bats did not go to sleep after last week’s game, right from the start the Travelers took command. First up, Ralph Francis singled. Dale Dunham walked and Bobby Watson singled, loading the bases for slugger Johnny Cloos. It had been a long time since the Travelers were able to set up the perfect scenario, not since 1956 have the Travelers been able to put the first three runners on base and lead up to cleanup hitter, Johnny Cloos. Cloos lives for this situation and he rarely lets them pass without fireworks. He did not disappoint on Saturday. Cloos took Steelers pitcher, Bart Diamora, deep into the count and connected with a low fastball and sent it into the center field stands for his first grand slam of the year. The Travelers did not stop there. After Cloos, Tony Dimero squeaked a single by first base, Frankie Jones, and was able to steal second. Joey Brown sent him to third with a sacrifice and Arty Archibald brought him home with another single. The bleeding finally was stopped when Billy Sweet hit into a double play to end the inning.
The first inning was explosive for the Travelers and the Steelers were unable to mount any sizable comeback. They were able to scatter two runs, one in the fifth and one in the eighth. On the other hand, the Travelers were able to add to the score with single runs in the 4th, 5th, 6th and seventh. The Travelers were able to finish with a season high 21 hits.
The Travelers will continue their home stand next week as they host the Erie Eagles on Saturday afternoon. The game begins at 1:30 in the Travelers Park.
