SPRING FAIR IS A BIG HIT

East Farewell – The ninth annual Spring Fair took place over the weekend and was, as usual, a big hit. The Fair has come to include a whole weekend of events. On Friday night there was the hugely popular Main Street Stroll where what seemed like their entire town strolled through town in the evening. They gaily greeted each other, shopped in stores that were gladly opened by their merchants much later than usual and dined at the restaurants that had set up outside tables with festive lighting and snappy tablecloths. Many people commented on the similarity of Main Street to a famous Parisian street even if they had never been to Paris. On Saturday the Fun Pier opened its doors and a midway was setup on the Lakefront Plaza as large crowds flocked to the fair-like atmosphere. Most of the crowd moved down to the Ball Park to watch the Travelers take on the Albany Senators and on Sunday the Midway and Fun Pier reopened and everyone enjoyed a wonderful day by the lake and on the Tilt-A-Whirl and Carousel.

TRAVELERS VETO SENATORS

East Farewell – The Travelers added to the excitement of the Spring Fair events when they handed the Albany Senators their fifth loss on Saturday night, 5-1. The night game was a sold out affair attended by mostly by loyal Traveler fans coming from the hugely successful Spring Fair that opened the Fun Pier and offered sidewalk dining along Main Street. Most of the crowd was in a very festive mood and cheered the Travelers on with gusto. The Travelers did not disappoint the crowd by starting off with two runs in the first. A quick single for Dunham turned into a two run lead when Johnny Cloos send his tenth homer over the left field wall. The Senators tried to get back in the game with a strong fourth inning with two hits back to back by Franks and Doyle a rare wild pitch by Joe Nagy advanced both runners and a Texas league single by Sanders brought Franks in. Nagy then settled down and struck out the side, leaving Doyle and Sanders stranded. That was the only real threat the Senators were able to generate. Except for that inning Nagy was in strong form harking back to his perfect performance at the end of last season. He was able to strike out eight and only walk four. The Travelers were able to turn two double plays and tamp out any possible crowd disappointment. The Travelers went on to score two more runs in the sixth with the bottom of the order, Brown and Archibald both singled and were brought home by a clean double by leadoff hitter, Ralph Francis. They sealed the outcome with a solo homer by Bobby Watson to bring the final to 5-1.
The Travelers are back on the road next week as they travel to Bear Creek to meet the Cubs for the first time this year. The game begins at 1:30 on Saturday afternoon.

QUIET SOUTHERN FILIBUSTER ON CIVIL RIGHTS – IKE LOSES BUDGET BATTLE – 57% THINK NO WAR – RICKY NELSON SINGS – NYC TRIES TO KEEP DODGERS & GIANTS – GLEASON SELLS HONEYMOONERS FOR 3 MILLION

Sen. Irving Ives (R-NY) says the administration’s civil rights bill “is the victim of a quiet southern filibuster” within the Senate Judiciary Committee. Ives said he still is hopeful that the bill will emerge from the Judiciary Committee and be brought to a vote in the Senate before Congress adjourns.

President Eisenhower suffers a first-round defeat in the military budget battle when the House rejects an attempt to restore $80 million of the pared-down Army appropriation.

Another Elvis - or the closest thing could be Ricky Nelson (17), who for the past few years has been seen with his family on “Ozzie and Harriet” on ABC-TV. But recently, something happened. Not long ago on the show, he did an Elvis imitation. The show carried tens of thousands of ohs and ahs from teens across the nation.  Record companies began bidding for Rick to record a song. He accepted an offer from Verve and recorded “I’m Walking.” The record was released April 10 and has sold some 500,000 copies. Rick is delighted. He says the only prior singing was around the piano with his family and friends. Rick graduates next month from Hollywood High School and may follow his brother David into USC. But, says Ricky - “I’d rather just sing - a am not crazy about school.” He says he’d like to take a small combo and tour the country this summer, singing in one-night stands. He says he’s a great admirer of Elvis Presley, When they met he said Presley began quizzing him on show business, “I was the old timer.”

New York City mayor Robert Wagner says the city will not be “blackjacked” and is meeting with Dodger’s owner Walter F. O’Malley to keep the team in the city. He’ll do the same with Giant’s owners. Wagner restated the city’s determination to do “everything within reason” to keep the Giants and Dodgers here. The Mayor’s move comes less than 24 hours after the National League had authorized the clubs to move to the West Coast if they desired. Los Angeles wants the Dodgers as does San Francisco and the Giants. Both cities are now represented in the Pacific Coast League.

Jackie Gleason sells all 39 episodes of the filmed “Honeymooners” series to CBS Films for $1.5 million. The shows aired over the 1955-1956 season on CBS-TV. Buick financed production of the films under an agreement made with Jackie Gleason Enterprises in 1954. Buick paid the company $2,535,000 for the series of 39 plus $422,500 to repeat 13 of the shows last summer. After Buick sponsored the shows, they became the property of Jackie Gleason’s company.  CBS Films will syndicate the series on a station-by-station basis.

REGIONAL HIGH SENIOR PROM GETS NEW SOUND

East Farewell- The Regional High Senior Prom was held on Saturday night and sported a different look than the stuffy, formal affairs of the past. This year’s gala did have the formal gowns and tuxedos from the past and it also involved the before prom dinners at all of the town’s restaurants but this year the music that was supplied by a young group called The Blackjacks and while they did play some of the swing music and jitterbug favored by the chaperones their main fare was the new sound called rock and roll. The kids danced dances that were jitterbug and swing dance like but the music jumped with a rebellious new beat and they all loved it.

TRAVELERS DEFENSE OVERCOMES MINERS OFFENSE

Slate Mountain – Remarkable dense that included a triple play stymied a dazzling pitching performance by Slate Mountain’s pitching ace, Tony “Michael” Angelo, who pitched a superb game including nine strikeouts. The Miners were not able to overcome the tremendous, tenacious defense that the Travelers put up against the league leaders. The Travelers were able to squeak by the Miners 4-3 and move into a tie for first place in the standings.
The game started with as a pitcher’s showdown with both Angelo and Travelers pitcher, Danny Lane.  They both pitched three perfect innings and the game looked like it was going to be one of the fastest in baseball history.  The Miners struck first in the fourth scoring two runs with four consecutive hits off the previously unhittable Lane. But then the Traveler’s defense came to life. The inning was ended with a double play. There were three more double plays recorded and one incredible triple play in the seventh. By the seventh inning the Travelers had been able to tie the game, 3-3 with a Durham single driving in Silver and Watson stuck out to end the Travelers side.  The Miners started their half of the inning with high hopes as Randolph walked and Young singled. Then Bell hit a line shot that looked like it was going between Dale and Richie Lane but Dale dove and hit the ball straight up in the air and Richie Lane grabs it out of the air catching both Randolph and Young in the middle of the base paths, apparently thinking the ball had gotten through. Lane fired the ball to Archibald who immediately turned it to Watson as if he were completing a double play only in this case it was a triple play, the first in the league in four years, and that brought the Miners threat to an abrupt end. The Travelers defense did not let up, shutting down the Miners in the eighth while their offense came alive in the ninth scoring a solo homer by Johnny Cloos. Danny Lane was able to close the game out in the ninth with a final strike out with one man on. The game had many defensive highlights that were expected in a game the pitted the two best teams in the league and arch-rivals but it also had some glimpses of brilliant offensive play the were quietly beautiful in their own respect.
The Travelers will bring their defensive skills to bear against an expansion team next week when the play the Albany Senators back at home. The evening game begins at 7:30 PM. This game will be part of the Spring Fair event that is taking part in town next weekend. The Senators are fairing much better than the Vikings and the Travelers are not taking this game lightly. “Those guys have shown they can play with the best, beating Mountain View and Youngtown back to back along with a bunch of other wins. They can’t be taken lightly,” said manager Sam Fowler.

IKE SPEAKS OUT AGAINST BUDGET CUTS – BECK ADMITS ‘MISTAKES’ – GRAHAM SAYS THE END IS NEAR – STENGEL BENCHES BERRA & FORD – WILLIAMS LOSES TEMPER – ELVIS GET GOOD REVIEW

In a radio and TV address, President Eisenhower speaks out against the possibility of a congressional budget cut and warned that crippling his $4 billion foreign aid program will weaken the nation and invite war. “Let none of us forget that there is no waste so colossal as war itself... We live in a time when the cost of peace is high yet the price of war is higher and is paid in different coin - with the lives of our youth and the devastation of our cities.”

Teamsters Chief Dave Beck, under questioning by the Senate labor rackets Investigating Committee which has accused him of stealing union finds, concedes he may make mistakes.

At Madison Square Garden, Billy Graham tells a record-size audience that the world is coming to an end. “I have not only God’s word for it, that the end of the world is in sight, but I have the word of the scientists... As sure as I am standing here tonight, the world as we know it is coming to an end.”

Yankee manager Casey Stengel benched pitcher Whitey Ford and catcher Yogi Berra in a game against Kansas City. Both star players were at a club last night when a New York delicatessen owner claimed Yankee outfielder Hank Bauer slugged him during an argument. “I can’t pitch a pitcher who stays out until 2 in the morning and then the whole world knows about it. And Berra should have known better too.” Stengel also dropped Bauer in the batting rankings - he’ll be batting at #8.

Ted Williams’ temper gets him into hot water again - this time for flinging his bat toward the Boston dugout after fouling out to the catcher during the first inning of a game with Detroit.

In a teen column, here is what writer “Pauline” thinks about Elvis Presley: I think Elvis Presley is a wonderful person and this is why Elvis has his own style, he isn’t another anybody. His music makes me happy. It’s gay and has feeling. As for his gyrations, I think many people make a lot of them because they have to find fault with something. I certainly don’t think they are vulgar in any way. They merely put movement and emotion into the song.” ‘
“As for Elvis contribution to juvenile delinquency, that is absurd. This so-called ‘delinquent’ doesn’t drink, smoke or swear. He has strong religious feeling. He respects his parents and does much for them. If every young adult would follow his example, I don’t think there would be so much delinquency.”

SNOOPING ON CAMPSITE EXPOSED

East Farewell- The East Farewell police uncovered a disturbing secret observation platform that overlooked the N.U.D.E. campground beach. Over the weekend two officers, Frank Mullen and Dave Roach, investigated an anonymous tip about an overlook across from the beach equipped with a telescope, several lawn chairs and an empty cooler. No one was found at the site although the officers did find some clues but they were not disclosed because of the ongoing investigation.
“It seems like a pretty well set up site, nice telescope, kind of comfortable chairs, I would bet it was a bunch of teenagers who are responsible,” speculated Mrs. Mallard, local resident. “These kids today are only looking for fun. You never know what they will do next. This was obviously well thought out. That site was way off the road and hidden from the lake. The poor naked people didn’t have a clue they were being watched, not that they cared, but still.”
When Frank Logan, president of N.U.D.E., was told of the peeping he was understandably upset but philosophical. “We have run into this before at other locations and quite frankly I’m not surprised. The American society today has been unfortunately repressed by Victorian morays that are very out of date. Members of our society believe in the free expression of ideas and communing with nature in our original state. Some people don’t understand our views, we understand that. We try to live and let live, understand?”

The police will continue their investigation and made the site inaccessible by placing large logs and heavy underbrush in the path from the street. “That is going to stop most people but if someone really wanted to get back there they could find a way through the woods, but we will be watching and the folks across the lake also have been alerted to keep an eye on the spot for any suspicious activity. Personally, I think it was a bunch of boys sneaking around trying to get a quick peek at some naked people. Kids today,” said Officer Roach when asked for his impression of the situation.

TRAVELERS MAUL VIKINGS

Monticello – The Monticello Vikings have had a difficult time in their debut season. They have only won two games so far, their opener and two weeks ago with a surprising win against Corning. The Travelers added to their woe with a crushing 9-0 defeat on Saturday. The hopes of a turnaround were rudely squashed by the big bats of Cloos, Dimero and Watson. The sterling pitching by Joe Nagy added insult to injury by striking out ten hapless Vikings and holding the team to a miserly four hits and no runs.
The brand new Monticello field was beautiful and the fans are offered a fantastic view from almost any seat. The Monticello fans have turned out to be a very loyal group who come out to support their team even though they don’t have a lot cheer about. The expansion team is in their first season and many fans are somewhat philosophical about the early ‘growing’ pains. “You have to start somewhere,” said Viking fan Dave Welsh, “We have nowhere to go but up, right? They are going to get better right now it is OK just to come out to this wonderful park and root for them.”
The Travelers were not as gentle to their hosts. Johnny Cloos blasted a grand slam in the fourth, Tony Dimero smashed a three run homer in sixth and Bobby Watson capped things off with a three run dinger in the ninth. The defense was superb, turning a double play to knock out the Vikings only possible offensive threat in the fifth. The combination of superior offense and rock solid defense by the Travelers did not leave any room for the up and coming Vikings to move but they were not discouraged as catcher Ralph George said after the game, “We improve each time we take the field. Even though this was a tough loss we learned a lot and will be better next week.”
The Travelers stay on the road next week as they visit their arch-rivals, the Slate Mountain Miners and their ace Tony “Michael” Angelo. The Miners are doing well sitting at 5-2 on the season and tied with the Travelers in the standings. Angelo has been remarkable once again this season not having a loss yet and commanding a very respectable 1.0 ERA. The game begins at 1:05 in Slate Mountain.

TRANSIT SYSTEM GETS NEW CARS

East Farewell- The EFTA (East Farewell Transit Authority) said it will purchase five new trolley cars from the Budd Company in Philadelphia. Transit Authority president, Gerald Fromm, made the announcement on Tuesday from the EFTA headquarters located above the Lake Shore Drive depot. The transit system has been operating for two years and has been an unquestionable success. Ridership has gone up every quarter since it started in March of 1955. The system loops around town and has become a fixture in town and while it currently runs down the street there has been talk of digging a tunnel and placing it under ground. The talks have only been among long range planners but some people in town have expressed a bit of annoyance at the increase in the traffic created by the stopping of the trolleys at every other corner. “I wouldn’t mind them putting it underground,” said Sue Logan, “after all, there are lots of stops and people want to get by the cars. I’m surprised some one hasn’t been run down yet.”

The new cars are expected to be delivered by August and will be put into service immediately. Fromm said with the increase in ridership the extra cars were needed to keep up the service that people have come to expect. With the new cars the EFTA will be able to expand the hours of operation, adding earlier trains and running the service later into the night. Right now the service runs from 6:00AM to 11:15PM. The new hours will help accommodate the newly announced extended hours of operation by the Iron Works. The longer hours of operation will support the added shifts at the Iron Works.

TRAVELERS SOAR WITH EAGLES

Erie – The Travelers bounced back from their dismal performance last week. They matched up with a strong Eagles team that had only lost one game this early season. Both teams were normally known for their prodigious run output struggled in their previous games. The Eagles barely slipped by a far inferior team from Bear Creek and the Travelers problems were duly noted in this column last week. The game on Saturday was entirely different. Both teams came out swinging and hitting. The Travelers started with three runs in the first only to be matched by the Eagles in the bottom of the first. Both pitchers, Billy Green for the Travelers and Ken Baker for the Eagles, were not as bad as the 11-10 score might infer. They both let up a lot of hits and there were a lot of runs scored but Green had a seven strike out series and Baker only walked two and helped turn two double plays. The runs came in bunches, for the Travelers it was three in the first, three in the third, two in the sixth, two in the seventh and the winning run in the tenth. For the Eagles they had three in the first, two in the second, four in the fourth, and one in the ninth. They came up short in the tenth when they had a man on first but were unable to advance as Green was able to strike out the final batter, Hank Harrison, to get the win. The game was a knock down battle of the bats that the Travelers were able to win. It was a bounce back for both teams that both needed and placed them both back on the top of the league.
The Travelers visit Monticello next week in their first game against the expansion team. The Vikings are showing some first season jitters, not having any wins this season so far. The evening game begins at 7:05 in the new, beautiful Monticello Park.
