RESTAURNT CELEBRATES ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY

East Farewell – It has been a year since the Lost Oasis opened on Lake Shore Drive and almost everyone in town agrees that it has become a valuable, contributing member of the towns thriving business district.  A year ago that statement was not widely agreed upon.  On opening night the Lost Oasis had the waiters and waitresses dress in Arabian attire with the men dressed in linen shirts, unbuttoned halfway and turbans while the woman dressed as what can only be described as belly dancers and many had their navels exposed. It was all in fun and not intended to offend anyone but owner Charles Wenz from New York slightly misgauged the town’s moral temperature and was widely criticized for the prank. After openly and publicly apologizing, Wenz was forgiven and went on to become a widely respected member of the business community and a huge booster and sponsor for the town and events. The restaurant has become very popular and has changed from its original Middle Eastern menu to a more traditional American fare. Wenz has said on a number of occasions that he intends to cater to what the people want and by following that philosophy he has made the Lost Oasis the number one restaurant destination in the “Destination Station”
“I love this town and I want to do everything I can to make it better,” Wenz said recently, “I know the folks have supported the Lost Oasis and I, in turn have gladly supported them. We have had a presence at every event this year and we feel we will have a long run here in East Farewell.”

Judging from the lines that form outside the doors at dinner time that is an understatement and everyone in town would agree.

TRAVELERS BACK UP WITH EXTRA INNING WIN

Riverview – The Travelers got back on the winning side last Saturday with a tenth inning win over the Anglers in Riverview, 6-5.  The win was sorely needed by the Travelers who had lost three straight and four out of their last five.  This win was not a crushing slam that would have reassured the Travelers fans but it was a win and an exciting game.  Both teams started off with strong pitching and remained scoreless for the first five innings. In the top of the sixth Joey Brown looped a double into center and then stole third.  Billy Sweet was able to score him with another double after Arthur struck out. Pitcher Danny Lane was able to move Sweet to third with a sacrifice bunt and then “Mean” Richie Lane crushed a fastball out of the park to make the score 4-0 and the big win looked like it was in the cards.  But Anglers pitcher, Freddie Vance, settled down and finished off the side. In the bottom of the fifth the Anglers struck with a three run blast from Dave Martin and then took a 5-4 lead in the eighth. Bobby Watson was able to draw a walk in the bottom of the ninth and was moved over to third by a line hugging drive into the right corner by Cloos. With two outs in the bottom of the ninth Billy Sweet was up and with the count 3-2 he was able to squeeze a single through the middle to score Watson and tie the game. Lane was able to retire the side and Francis led off but flied out. Dunham hit a single into left then was able to advance to second on a passed ball. Bobby Watson then took Vance to a 3-2 count before smashing a long drive to center field and brought Sweet in for the winning score.
The Travelers stay on the road next week when they meet the Cedar Creek Bulls. The game is in the evening and starts at 7:30PM.

IKE SUMS UP FIRST SIX MONTHS – CALLS EAST GERMAN REGIME BANKRUPT – MORMANS ROUNDED UP IN ARIZONA – TAFT DYING

President Eisenhower sums up his first six months in the White House by saying progress has been made though not as much as he had hoped. He said he still is hopeful a reasonable armistice will be signed soon. Also from the President - American food will remain available in West Berlin for the East Germans in spite of Soviet resentment. The President said East Germans can come and get it as long as they aren’t prevented from doing so. He said the $15 million worth of food was offered for humanitarian purposes and it is difficult to understand objections to feeding hungry people. Russia had demanded that the U.S. stop supplying free food to hungry East Germans, charging that American charity was aimed at stirring-up an anti-Communist revolt.

President Eisenhower said the riot-shaken East German Communist regime is bankrupt and renewed a demand for free all-German elections as a step toward unifying the divided country.

An entire community of 122 polygamists, excommunicated Mormons in Short Creek Arizona, is raided an hour before dawn by more than 100 state patrolmen and deputy sheriffs under an insurrection proclamation by Arizona’s Gov. Howard Pyle to clean up what he called a foul and ruthless conspiracy dedicated to white slavery. Midnight roadblocks and monitored telephones cut off all outside communication with this communal farm village on the Arizona-Utah border in the desolate strop area north of the Grand Canyon.

Sen. Robert Taft of Ohio is reported in a coma and is dying from cancer of the blood.

FUN PIER CONSTRUCTION COMPLETE AND OPEN FOR FUN

East Farewell – “We have completed all the construction. All the rides are open and everyone is welcome to come on down,” proclaimed owner and top promoter Sam Lendel. The construction Lendel was referring to was the completion of several rides including a new Roller Coaster that soars almost forty feet high, Bumper Cars, Kiddie rides and a Fun House with a mirror jungle. They all were added to the Fun Pier after it was nearly destroyed last winter. An extra length of pier was added and was filled with shops and dining areas. All the work was completed in record time as Lendel oversaw the project with daily on-site appearances.
The Fun Pier has been a regional summer attraction for many years and has grown every summer with either added rides or other amenities like shops or the midway.  This year the Roller Coaster took the center stage. Built on a steel and wood reinforced frame the Coaster tops out at thirty-eight feet and has a primary down slope of 78º. This makes the coaster reach speeds up to 85 mph at its fastest speed. When matched with all the twists and turns the ride is one minute of thrilling, scary fun.  The Bumper Cars are an electric crash derby contained in a 100 foot oval that is gives many kids their first chance to drive a vehicle that does not have pedals.  The Fun House is just goofy with a deceiving mirror jungle at the end. Many enter but few exit without bumping into themselves there. The Kiddie Ride section has a nifty little teacup ride, a motorboat ride, a motorcycle ride and a miniature carousel.  All the rides are especially designed for children under the age of eight and offer a great adventure for the very young.

All the new rides add some more excitement to the already famous and historic rides like the Ferris wheel that majestically towers over Lake Charles and the historic carousel that has been spinning on the Pier since it opened in the 1920’s.  Many folks have tried for the brass ring and took in the breath taking view of the Lake and this summer is not an exception, with the bigger and brighter Pier the folks are flocking to it every night. Crowds have been very large so far this summer in spite of the construction. Now that the building is finished and the area is clear of safety barricades even larger crowds are expected.  The Pier is open every day and until 9:00PM on week nights and 11:00PM on Friday and Saturday nights. The wonderful weather has surely contributed to the large turnout but the new rides and shops are certainly going to add happy visitors to the Pier.

TRAVELERS STRUGGLE AGAINST EXPLORERS

East Farewell – Joe Trane lived up to his nickname “Freight” as he hauled his Explorers past the stationary Travelers on Saturday, 5-1. The Explorers were tied with the Travelers in the standings until Saturday when Freight Trane came to town and was able to keep the Travelers of the scoreboard until the ninth when they were able to score one off two hits.  The Travelers could only manage four hits in the entire game while the Explorers were able to connect with 12 hits off Joey Alfred.
Both side were quite, going scoreless in the first three innings but then the Explorers opened up the game with a four run fourth with double by Watkins, a single by Delong, a run scoring single by Getz and then a long home run by their slugger Bobby “Hammer” Taxen. Taxen leads the league in home runs with 15 at the half way mark of the season. The fourth inning would have been enough but the Explorers were able to score one more in the eight.  It wasn’t until the ninth that the Travelers were able to do any damage to Trane’s very strong outing. Bobby Watson was able to rope a double and Johnny Cloos was able to connect with a single, scoring Watson. That was it for the Travelers.
The Travelers will try to get some offense back when they play the Riverview Anglers at the park next Saturday. The game begins at 1:30PM.

FIREWORKS EXPLODE

East Farewell – The much anticipated fireworks display over Lake Charles celebrating the Fourth of July was quite the explosion. Unfortunately it was not the beautiful display that everyone expected. Five minutes into the show and errant spark jumped into the storage area and ignited the entire storage area. The explosion was technically multiple explosions but was massive none the less and went on for almost four minutes keeping the standby fire truck and firemen away until it had almost blown itself out. Amazingly no one was injured and there was virtually no property damage because the area was an open field that was well fenced. Most of the ignitions were vertical but some did shoot out horizontally and they posed the most danger to the attendants and the crowd.  The event was visible from the Lakefront Plaza and some of the explosions were visible from across the lake.
Even though the big show was cut short the party at the Lakefront Plaza continued on after everything was declared safe. Gus Templeton and his orchestra played an extra set and Big Roy and the Magnificents really got the people dancing with their very exciting rhythm and blues. Gus Sloan closed out the night with his second jazz set.  The restaurants and shops that had set up café seating and booths kept the evening going and stayed open until the end of the evening. They had originally planned to close once the fireworks started.

Fire Chief, Leon Barnes, started the investigation as soon as the fireworks were brought under control. He issued a preliminary report on Monday that points to an ignition spark landing in the storage area and igniting the stored fireworks. No intentional sabotage has been indicated. It seems it was just a spectacular accident.

NAGY DAZZELS WITH NO HITTER

East Farewell – Joe Nagy put on a pitching show for the crowd at the new ball park on Saturday. He was able to strike out nine and lead the Travelers to a 4-0 win over the Erie Eagles. The game gave the struggling Travelers a big lift after losing three on the road.  Nagy started out by striking out the first four batters and then having the next two hit in to infield outs. In the third Eagle, Bobby Rome hit a long fly to right but that was it, both Ford and Gamble grounded out. On the other side of the scorecard the Travelers went to deep right when leadoff hitter Ralph Francis knocked one out of the park on a 2-1 curve ball from Eagles starter Ben Rice.  By the seventh inning the game had become almost a showplace for Nagy. He struck out at least one batter in every inning, only one batter, Jones, was able to reach on a walk. The Travelers had scored two more one in the fifth and one in the sixth. Nagy seemed to get stronger as the game went on, striking out the side in the seventh and two in the eighth.  Only in the ninth did the Eagles scare the hometown fans. After Ford grounded out, Gamble went 3-2 against Nagy. The pay-off pitch was a fastball that looked close inside. Umpire, Dick Farley, called a ball four and put Gamble on. Nagy regained his composure and pitched a fastball to Rucci who hit a stinger to Dale who easily turned the double play with Archibald to Watson to end the inning and any Eagle threat. The Travelers added some salt to the wound by Johnny Cloos blasting one out in the bottom of the eighth.
The Travelers are home for the next three weeks. Next week they play the Mountain View Explorers with ace Joe “Freight” Trane pitching and slugger Bobby “Hammer” Taxen. The game begins at 1:30 at the new ball park.

COMMIES READY TO SIGN ARMISITICE – WAR TO END SOON – UNEMPLOYMENT DOWN TO NEW LOW

Communist truce negotiators announce that they are ready to sign the armistice on the basis of U.N. promises that South Korea will honor it.  The Reds propose that armistice negotiators begin “immediately” to discuss preparations for the truce-signing ceremony.

45,000 American and South Korean troops counterattack the Communists along the Korean central front bulge in the biggest allied attack in several years.

Unemployment in the U.S. reaches the lowest point since WWII - at about 1.7 million workers out of work, compared with 3.1 million in 1950.

EAST FAREWELL GETS READY FOR EXPLOSIVE FOURTH

East Farewell – The town is gearing up for a huge Fourth of July celebration coming this weekend. Tomorrow night, July 3rd, there will be a Main Street Stroll featuring all the restaurants and stores staying open until 10:00 PM or later so people can wander through the town and sit for a bit  in the decidedly Parisian flavor of decked out cafes and bistros. On Saturday there will be a parade down Main Street and a Travelers home game. Saturday evening is when the fun really begins.  There will be a Lakefront Plaza concert and open picnic starting at 6:00PM. The concert will feature local favorite and national band leader, Gus Templeton and his orchestra. Along with Templeton, jazzman Gus Sloan with his five piece jazz band will add some great music. The joint will get really jumping when Big Roy and the Magnificents perform their rhythm and blues set.  After the sun sets the fire department plans to set off the largest fireworks display the town has ever seen.  They have cleared an area behind the Plaza as a staging area for the setting off the display.  The trajectory will take the fireworks out over the lake and should be excellent viewing form almost anywhere on the lake.  Many folks with lakefront properties are planning smaller, private parties for the event.  All are welcome to the Plaza party.

TRAVELERS LOSE ANOTHER ONE

Youngstown – The Travelers were unable end their road trip on a winning note when they lost to the Youngtown Steelers 6-3 last week.  Thankfully they open an extended home stand this Saturday.  They are playing much better at home than on the road. They have not lost at home this season but have only won two out of four on the road.
The Steelers are leading the league and came out swinging scoring two quick runs in the first, the first was a one pitch blast by Frank Walker. That was followed by a double by Dave O’Hara and a sacrifice by Swanson rattled starter Billy Green. The Travelers struck back in the second with a three run homer by Johnny Cloos who is leading the league in dingers. Unfortunately, that was all the Travelers could get on the board.  The Steelers went on to score two more off Green and then two in the eighth off reliever, Tommy Long.
The Travelers are coming home on Saturday with an afternoon game against the Erie Eagles. The game starts at 1:30 at the new ballpark.
