BIG BIRTHDAT BASH AT FUN PIER
East Farewell – It is not uncommon to have a local birthday
party hosted at the Fun Pier. For many local children it is a rite of passage
of sorts. “Once I Can Pat Your Head, You Can Ride!” Quigley, the famous clown
at the entrance to the bumper cars, cartoons out with his hand set a about 48”.
Many local children have eagerly stepped up, some on tiptoes to pass into the
crazy mayhem of bumper cars and a magical step into young adulthood.
Last Tuesday
the Fun Pier hosted a birthday celebration of a different sort, it threw itself
a party. The Fun Pier has had a checkered history. The
Pier was built by Sam Lendel, brother of Sid Lendel, one of East
Farewell’s founders, and opened in 1948.It suffered two devastating
hurricanes in 1951 & 1952 but it rebuilt each time and was stronger and
more up to date each time. The signature rides, the 50’ Ferris wheel, the
historic carousel, the Bumper Cars and the famous favorite Tilt-A-Whirl all
have modern, electric drives and all new mechanics. The vendor stations make up
a big part of the Pier. They surround the rides and along with the ticket
office make a nice perimeter around the Pier. “I don’t think you can put a real
“Start” date on this place because it has been built, destroyed, rebuilt,
destroyed again and rebuilt again and it is here now,” said Sam Lendel during
the birthday bash, “so I am declaring July 13th as the birthday of
the Fun Pier, that’s also my brother’s birthday and I think I am going to
assign 1948 as the “birthdate” so there you go. Write that in the history
books.”
The Bash went
on from opening (10:00AM) through the day and all the way to closing (10:00PM)
with a “birthday cake ceremony” at noon where free cake was given out. All
throughout the day rides and food were priced 1948 prices which was about 1/3
off. The crowd was full all day. The Fun Pier is an integral part of East
Farewell and will play a big part in many memories for a long time.

TRAVELERS TAKE A SWIPE AT THE CUBS
Bear Creek – The Travelers came into
Bear Creek after fighting through a slugfest at Slate Mountain. They were up because
of the win but they were tired because
it was a long hard fought, 12-11 victory, The Bear Creek Cubs did not care.
They had won their last game, too. The Travelers sent ace Joe Nagy to the mound
and he was ready to go. Nagy was in fine form as he retired the first three
Cubs easily, one strike out, one foul out and one ground out. He was able to
keep the Cubs quiet until the sixth inning when they were able to tag Nagy for
two runs off three hits and a walk.
The
Travelers offense was not going to leave Joe out to dry, they were able to give
a nice cushion with two runs in the second and two more in the fourth. Joey
Brown was able to break his three game hitting slump with a double in the
fourth. He later scored on a single by Ralph Francis. The Travelers held control
throughout the game. They added the nail to the coffin with three runs in the
eighth off a massive three run blast by Johnny Cloos. The Cubs added two more
in the bottom of the ninth but the damage was done. The Travelers won 7-4.
The Travelers head home for a rare home game on the reengineered Fangrounds. The field has been approved by the league but is not approved by the fans. They want a new stadium built where the old stadium, “the Rest Stop”, was but burned down in 1950. The game will start at 1:05. The crowds are still expected to show up.
