BUILDING BOOM HITS EAST FAREWELL

East Farewell – The secret is out. Perhaps the two consecutive honors from the Mighty Keystone Railroad as a Destination Station are to blame or maybe it was the new jobs offered by the Iron Works. Whatever it was it seems everyone in flocking to East Farewell. “It seems like there is a gold rush or something,” commented Natalie Mallard, local resident and singer, “People are showing up, buying lots by the lake and building. It is just crazy all the activity. I love it.”

            Indeed, building permits have flooded the Town Registrar and have tripled since last year. Most are for land that is close to or on the lake and vary in size from the smallest, ½ acre, to lots consisting of several acres. The Lakefront lot size has been capped by the Town Council to 1 acre to maximize the distribution. There have been accounts of people trying to bundle lots by two different buyers buying two adjacent lots and then trying to combine them. The Council is looking into that type action and is going to rule on the permissibility of that action within the next two weeks.  New lots are being developed almost as soon as settlement is reached, in some cases the building has started the same day as the settlement.

            While most of the activity is taking place around the lake, downtown has enjoyed a boom of its own. New shops have opened all along Lake Shore Drive and Main Street. The new Transit System has extended the reach of the shopping district and buildings that have been vacant for a long time are being rehabilitated and reopened. The Main Street Stroll this year will include almost seven blocks, a huge change from the two blocks when it was initiated in 1952.

TRAVELERS VISIT TO BEAR CREEK

Bear Creek – The Travelers took their show on the road early in the season as they visited Bear Creek for the Cubs home opener. The Cubs sold out their park for the opener and have been substantially upgraded in the off-season but they could not match the sheer power of the Travelers offense. The Travelers prevailed in a close game, 6-5.

            The Cubs acquired a couple of top notch players from the Carolina League, Jimmy Doyle and Ernie Wilkins and a very exciting rookie, Ned Raft, from State College. They are expected to make a run at the championship this year and they have strong offense and stringent defense but the Travelers were just too strong and too deep in this game.

            The Cubs struck first with a two run double by Wilkins in the second but the Travelers answered in the Third with a three run smash by Cloos. Starting pitchers, Danny Lane for the Travelers and Clyde Grover for the Cubs were a little shaky at the start but got into a groove after the third and threw respectable games but the early season stiffness showed on both sides. In the sixth the Cubs tacked on two more with a triple by Peters and the first ever professional homer by rookie, Raft. The crowd was delighted. The Travelers jumped back into the lead with a three singles by Brown, Sweet and Archibald and a bases clearing triple by Francis. The Cubs came up with one in the ninth but it was too little too late and the Travelers ended the game with a double play, Archibald to Dunham to Watson for the game.

            The Travelers stay on the road for the next three weeks. Next week they meet Corning with the great Bill “Smoke” Black pitching. The game begins at 1:00 in Corning.

Another wave emits colors of fluorescent tubes to blend or contrast with furniture or decorations. Automatic eyes will close windows and doors as the weather changes. Those same eyes will be able to control temperatures throughout the house. 

E. Krinov, goes on Soviet radio to allay Russian fear that a Martian space ship had landed. Krinov, secretary of the meteorite committee of the Soviet Academy of Science told his radio audience that the Martian space ship was really a meteorite. The excitement was set off by a popular Soviet science magazine.

“A CHRISTMAS CAROL” OPENS TO SOLD OUT CROWDS

---

The East Farewell Playhouse premiered its seasonal favorite, Charles Dicken’s A Christmas Carol on Friday night. The show will play until December 31^st when the Playhouse will host a grand finale/ New Year’s celebration. The show plays Friday and Saturday nights with a Saturday matinee and so far every performance has sold out.

This year the playhouse is very proud to announce the lead role of Ebenezer Scrooge will be played by none other than the esteemed Alastair Sim. He his fresh off his appearance in the 1951 movie where he played the gruff, angry old skinflint who is magically transformed into a beloved father figure by three ghosts that play his past, present and future. Last year the part was played by Leo G. Carroll but scheduling conflicts made his appearance impossible. He, being friends with Sim, suggested the show to Sim and introduced him to Jeb Bernstein, and Rick and Julie Davidson, the show producer and playhouse owner respectively. It was reported that Sim fell in love with East Farewell on his first visit and immediately signed on.

The performance closely follows Dicken’s tale and has several actors reprising their roles from last year. Fred Marshall is back as the humble Bob Cratchit, as well as Joey Townsend, 15, as Tiny Tim. Local songstress, Natalie Mallard takes on three completely different roles as Belle, Scrooge’s early love interest, the unflappable Mrs. Cratchit and as one of the charwomen who sell off Scrooge’s bed linens in the third act. It is a daunting task but Mallard handles the challenge superbly. Other cast members do very well also. A crowd favorite from last year is Thomas Durance, who reprises his role as the Ghost of Christmas present. His apparent ad-libs and improvisations keep the audience in stitches. The entire cast is impressive and it is obvious that they are having fun. The audience also has fun and as a growing tradition, this show is something not to be missed. Many folks have tickets for several shows. So, don’t miss it. There are still tickets available but they won’t be there for long.

COUGARS DEMOTE THE CAPTAINS

Fort Lee - The Cougars came into Fort Lee with high hopes. The Captains have suffered from a flu that that sidelined all but two of their starting five. They have been relying on second and third string players who are generally sophomores and even freshmen to carry the load. The experience-lacking team has not fared well in the early season but they have always played with determination and effort.

The Cougars were not sympathetic to the Captains plight. The took control at the first tip off and did not let go until the final buzzer. They did not trail the entire game. The best the Captains could do was tie the game at the beginning of the second half and again towards the end of the third quarter. Both times the Cougars had let their fist team sit and were giving the second team a chance to get some playing time as a complete squad. The Cougars walked off with an easy 48-40 victory. Surprisingly, forward Tommy O’Hare was leading scorer with 12 points, center, Michael Watson was key to O’Hare’s scoring frenzy by giving him the ball on picture perfect give and goes down the lane. Watson lead all players with 18 assists. The backcourt of Green and Welch were stellar on defense, causing 8 turnovers. The second team was able to get some real playing time and was able to score 6 points in their seven minutes of action.

“All and all it was a good game for the boys,” said Coach Wilson after the game, “We were able to get the second team in and they looked pretty good. I think they will be fine down the road. The Captains were struggling but I expect they will get much better once they get healthy.”

The Cougars travel  to Slate Mountain to face the Miners next week. The Miners have been unbeatable on their home court this season so the Cougars will have their work cut out for them. The game begins Friday night a 6:45 in the beautiful Slate Rock North gymnasium.

An Italian Airlines plane rams into a pier and bursts into flames at Idlewild Airport. The plane had made four attempts to land in the rain and mist. Most of the passengers on the DC-6B perished. 

Soviet Russia informs Britain it will scrap the British-Soviet Mutual Assistance Treaty of 1942 – a pact that has eight years to run, if ratification of the Paris agreements to rearm West Germany is completed.

Construction of a six-story $2.5 million office building that will pivot with the sun is scheduled to begin within nine months. To be erected in Grand Junction, CO, the revolutionary structure will pivot broadside to the sun in winter but keep edgewise to the searing summer days.

RCA says that scientists had experimentally achieved light amplification of ratios of more than 20 to 1 and were seeking to reach 100 to 1. RCA says the technology could be used in flat picture TV screens – ones that could be hung on the wall like a picture.

BOBBY JONES AND FRIENDS SURPRISE VISIT TO CLUB

East Farewell – The town was buzzing all week with excitement when golfing greats, Bobby Jones, Sam Snead and Ben Hogan showed up to inspect the new municipal golf links. The links have been officially open since June and Jones, who helped design the course, came into town to participate in the official naming ceremony. The ceremony took place on Saturday and the new name is the one that everyone had been calling it since it opened, Reese Farm Links. Jones’ pals, Snead and Hogan showed up for the fun and to shoot a round, Jones has long retired but did take a few swings to the great appreciation of his fans. The entire visit was unannounced and not publicized on purpose. Astonished golfers almost dropped their clubs when the three cued up at the first tee. The foursome in front of them asked if they would like to go ahead and defending Masters Tournament winner, Snead, graciously declined thrilling the foursome. The three walked the course and leisurely played a few holes. Jones pointed out his contributions to the course which was mainly designed by Robert Trent Lewis who was unable to attend due to a previous commitment.

After the three returned to the clubhouse the short naming ceremony took place. The main sign was unveiled and the three stars posed for a picture. They stayed and dined at the clubhouse. It was rumored that they stayed in Mrs. Mallard’s boarding house for the weekend but Mallard was uncharacteristically mum about her guests and whether or not they stay there. Later in the week they were seen walking and shopping on Main Street and dining in local restaurants like the Lost Oasis. The three said they expected to stay for the upcoming Music, Art & Country Fair coming next week. The Fair has grown enormously in its size and notability, so much so that it is bringing in huge celebrities like Golfers Big Three.

TRAVELER GO OUT ON A LEDGE AT SLATE MOUNTAIN

Slate Mountain – Traveler’s leftfielder Billy Sweet went all the way over the fence to make the play on Saturday night, twice. Sweet’s acrobatics helped the Travelers stop a Slate Mountain team that was on its way to moving into first place in the league standings. In the fourth inning Sweet took off after a long fly by Miners slugger, Louis Richards that looked like a homerun. Sweet tracked the ball to the fence then climbed the fence with a single leap, stuck his glove over the top and grabbed the ball stealing the dinger from Richards and ending a Miners scoring threat. Then in the ninth Sweet did it again. This time it was Miners catcher, Joe Bean smashing a long drive right towards the left field fence but Sweet got a good jump on it, tracked it to the fence and without stopping leap with one leg out, scaled the fence half way, stuck his glove over the fence and made the grab to the total astonishment of the entire crowd, both teams and end the game. The Travelers won 5-4. The catches were both game saving catches and stuff that keep people in the stands and talking about the games long after they are over.

            The Travelers took an early lead in the second with singles by Archibald and Green and a nice hit into the corner by Alfred driving in both Archibald and Green. Then in the seventh Francis, Dunham and Watson loaded the bases for Johnny Cloos. Johnny was up to the task, he seems to revel in pressure situations. The count went dramatically to 2-2 and Miners pitcher, Jones threw what may have been strike three but was a little low, but that is where Cloos likes them. He drove the ball to the right field fence scoring all three swift runners.

            The Miners did not roll over, they played a very tough game scoring two in the fifth, one in the sixth and one in the eighth. They had two men on in the ninth when Sweet made his spectacular catch. The Miners had won four in a row up until Saturday and had moved into second place behind the Travelers. Since the Travelers had lost three of their last four the stats were very close and a win would have pushed the Miners into the league lead. The Travelers were able to bring it all back and play an excellent game that included perhaps the most stupendous catches of the season.

            Due to a scheduling conflict in Corning the game that was originally scheduled to be played there will be moved to Travelers Park. This will be a pleasant addition to the 10^th Annual Music, Arts & Coutry Fair that is taking place in East Farewell next week.

Vice-President Nixon says those closest to President Eisenhower and the overwhelming majority of Republican leaders throughout the country are more optimistic than ever the he will run for re-election.

The Air Force announces that a North American F-100C Super Sabre set the world’s first official supersonic speed record over the Mojave Desert in August at 822.135mph.

Two British doctors say they cured children’s warts by “buying” them for a few pennies each and telling the children the blemishes would soon disappear. And believe it or not, Dr D.G. Aiken reports in the medical magazine “The Practitioner,” they really do disappear.” “The result has been quite astounding. Although I have not kept complete records, successful response has been founding over 60%of the cases. I usually offer sixpence (7cents) for the largest wart of a group and tell the child the clearance will take three weeks.”

In sports, Cleveland Indian outfielder Ralph Kiner (33), one of baseball’s greatest sluggers says he will retire after this season. Kiner has been having trouble with his back and legs. He’s lost the swing and power that kept him at the top of the National League in home-run hitting during seven seasons - ‘46-’52.
