NEW YEARS CELEBRATION BIG HIT

East Farewell- Fireworks and music welcomed 1953 to East Farewell with spectacle and wonderful noise.  The music complimented the dazzling display and the clear but cold night was perfect for the display.  The idea was the brainchild of the Civic Booster Club who floated the concept back in November.  The Town Council took it under consideration and after brief debate they went ahead with the project.  Starting at the strike of midnight the fireworks started over Lake Charles and continued for a full twenty minutes culminating with a tremendous finale.  The music was supplied by Les Charles and his Swing Band.  It was a new tradition that is sure to have long life in East Farewell history.  Many of the local restaurants set up on the edge of the new Family Fun Pier and served a wonderful selection of hot food and drinks to all.  The crowds were estimated to be in the thousands, many folks came from other towns and many were fans in town to watch the final Game of the East Farewell Winter Basketball Tournament.  It was a wonderful way to welcome the New Year.

COUGARS WIN WINTER TOURNAMENT

East Farewell-The Cougars won the first East Farewell Winter Tournament on Saturday with an exciting win over Fort Lee.  The tournament ran for three days starting Thursday night, Friday night and finished with the consolation game and the final on Saturday.  The tournament was put together at the last minute by Cougars Couch Charles Wilson and several other coaches in the league.  The teams represented along with the Cougars were; the Central Bears, Riverview Wildcats,  Slate Mountain Canaries, Riverview Wildcats, Fort Lee Captains, Southport Hawks, Slate Mountain Miners and the Corning Devils.

            The Cougars beat the Fort Lee Captains 45-42 in an exciting game that saw the lead change hands a total of ten times, seven in the second half.  Senior center, Bill Donahue, was named Most Valuable Player in the tournament.  He scored an appropriate 53 points in the entire tournament of four games.

NIXON HOSTS THE ROSE BOWL PARADE – HANK WILLIAMS DIES – AMERICANS OPTIMISTIC

Vice-President Richard M. Nixon serves as Grand Marshall of the Tournament of Roses parade. In his open car were his wife and two small children. After the parade, the family attended the Rose Bowl game between SC and Wisconsin.

Hank Williams - singer and composer “The King of Hillbillies” - dies in his automobile in Oak Hill, Virginia. The singer’s chauffeur said he became alarmed when he was unable to awaken Williams, who had been sleeping in a bed in the rear seat of the car. Williams was dead on arrival at the hospital.  Cause of death was not disclosed.  Williams had left Knoxville for Canton, Ohio, where the singer was scheduled to make a New Year’s Day appearance.  Williams penned and sang the top-selling hit “Jambalaya,” also “Cold Cold Heart,”  “Wedding Bells.” “Mansion on the Hill,” and “Move It Over.” Although he lived in Montgomery, Alabama, he was still employed by radio station KWKH in Shreveport, LA at the time of his death.  He was also under contract to MGM Recording Co and MGM Pictures. He was married to Miss Billie Jones on October 19th on the stage of the Municipal Auditorium in New Orleans. He had been divorced earlier this year by Mrs. Audra Mae Williams of Nashville.

CHRISTMAS IN EAST FAREWELL

---

East Farewell- Christmas was celebrated in East Farewell and the rest of the world yesterday and this paper postponed publication to allow the staff and crew to be with their families on the holiday.  The town was decorated with wonderful lights, ribbons and bows throughout the town.  The centerpiece was the beautiful Christmas tree that was placed in the center of town square.  It is a 20’ Douglas fir that has been decorated by the local Boy Scout Troop with decorations donated by local merchants.  With the late snow on December 21^st.the square was transformed into a winter wonderland.  The lights and bows made for a dazzling display at night.  The Nativity scene set up in front of St. John’s Church was also a highlight of the town’s decorations.  Along with the town sponsored decorations most of the merchants decorated their store fronts and front windows.  The town was certainly dressed up for the holiday.

            The townspeople also got into the spirit by turning out for the Main Street stroll on December 23^rd.  It was a spectacular success.  Main Street and Lake Shore Drive were full a folks strolling down the streets and conversing with each other.  Carolers gathered around the tree to sing carols and many passing folk joined in the gaiety. Many of the merchants stayed open late and the shops offered a warm respite and a chance to do any last minute shopping that was needed.  The restaurants and bars did an extremely brisk business offering food and drink for the strollers.  This was the third time the stroll was held and each year it becomes more popular.  “I just love this,” said Mrs. Mallard while strolling down Lake Shore drive with her daughter, Natalie, “the beautiful lights with all the shops lit up and all the people out and about, it is truly the most wonderful time of the year.”

BASKETBALL GAME POSTPONE DUE TO HOLIDAY

Corning- The basketball game scheduled between the East Farewell Cougars and the Corning Devils was postponed because the game was inadvertently scheduled for Christmas Eve.  “No one wants to play a game on Christmas Eve let alone go to one,” said Coach Wilson, “I spoke with Coach Barnes and he was of the same mind.  We will play after the holidays, there will be no problem working them into the schedule.” 

            The game has not been rescheduled yet but will be announced at the next game.  The next game will be against the Riverview Wildcats on January 7^th in Riverview.

Investigating Senators say that Radio and Television political campaigns cost $6 million in the 1952 election campaign.  Involved in the survey were expenditures on behalf of candidates for President, Vice-President and both Houses of Congress. The survey showed that Republicans spent 3,457,734 for radio and TV, compared with $2,673,576 by Democrats.

President-elect Eisenhower names three men to serve in $15,000-a-year jobs in the Justice Department under Herb Brownwell Jr., who will be the Attorney General in the new administration. Warren Olney will head the criminal division.  The other two are Warren Burger and J. Lee Rankin.

            The Cougars beat the Fort Lee Captains 44-42 in an exciting game that saw the lead change hands a total of ten times, seven in the second half.  The game was decided in the last minute by a powerful offensive rebound put back score by senior center, Bill Donahue. Donahue was named Most Valuable Player in the tournament.  He scored an appropriate 53 points in the entire tournament of four games.  Along with Donahue, the back court tandem of Ted Fitzgerald and Jimmy Welch made an impressive contribution of ball control and game management.

            The Fort Lee Captains were led by Josh Bower with 16 points and 10 rebounds.  The game seesawed in the second half as both sides ran full tilt up and down the court. “That makes for an exciting game, if those kids can keep that up more power to them,” said enthusiastic spectator, Bernie Lower. 

            The tournament was a huge success, drawing fans from all over the region.  It was a simple single elimination bracket style with the initial setup selection done by a random drawing. “We didn’t have a lot of time to set this up and with the holidays no one wanted to get too involved with the logistics.  Thanks to Regional High’s math whiz Howard Eisner we were able to get this all worked out and have a great time.  I think this tournament is here to stay and will only get bigger and better as time goes on.

            The final standings for the tournament were Cougars first, Captains second and the Devils third.  A great time was had by all the teams participating and all have indicated they would like to join next year’s tournament bracket.
