OKTOBERFEST COMES TO EAST FAREWELL

East Farewell- The crisp October air blows through town. The days are getting shorter and fall is in the air.  The trees are turning and the harvest is in the silos.  It must be time for Oktoberfest.  In a surprise announcement, the Town Council has declared the last week of October “Oktoberfest Week”  In the Bavarian tradition of celebrating the harvest season the town will open the fair grounds on Saturday, October 22 and run through Tuesday, November 1.  Many different vendors, food services and, of beer companies have already committed to the event.  The entire event was scheduled without any official announcements and for the most part local grassroots organization.  “This was really put together by the people for the people,” said Tom Conally in his best Abraham Lincoln at the official announcement on Wednesday. 

            The town does not have a historical link to Bavaria but it does share it similar beautiful landscapes and a love for festivals and beer.  The artistic community also shares a certain affinity for the Alpine, fresh air bucolic atmosphere that each area shares.  The festival is expected to bring in thousands from the entire tri-state area.  With a week-plus schedule, there is plenty of time for everyone to fit a visit into their schedule

COUGARS LOSE A CLOSE ONE TO CENTRAL

Centerboro- The East Farewell Cougars lost a close game to the Central Bears on Friday night, 14-7.  The game was tied until the last two minutes when Bears wide receiver, Ray Mandelli broke free from defensive back Billy Moyer and ran a post pattern to the end zone and quarterback Gino Christina threw a perfect pass for the score.  Time ran out before the Cougars could mount a comeback.

            The entire game was a defensive struggle and the Bears highly touted defense showed up to play.  Time and again they stymied the Cougars offense and forced punts.  The only time the Cougars were able to mount any offense was at the end of the first half when quarterback Jimmy O’Conner was able to work with wide receiver Mitch “Mercury” McMaster to string together a forty yard drive for a score.  Charlie Cox continued his perfect streak by connecting for the extra point.  Both teams showed strong resolve on the defensive lines and both were able to keep pressure on the opposing backfield not allowing two consecutive first down series except during the scoring drives.

            “We were expecting a tough, defensive game from those guys but they played a very good game and didn’t make any mistakes.  We played a strong game but I guess it wasn’t quite strong enough,” said senior quarterback, Billy O’Conner.

            Next week the team faces the Southport Hawks in Southport on Saturday at 1:30PM.

IKE’S HEART GETTING BETTER – MARILYN DIVORCES JOE- POP MUSIC THIS WEEK

Boston heart specialist Dr. Paul White says that President Eisenhower is convalescing well and the heeling of his heart has speeded up and he should be able to leave the hospital on schedule the week of November 5. Complete recovery should take two to three months. 

Marilyn Monroe divorced Joe DiMaggio this week. The couple was married January of last year. Monroe claimed DiMaggio had treated her with coldness and indifferences when she had expected love, warmth and affection.
