SIZZLING SUMMER HEAT BRINGS CROWDS TO TOWN & BEACH

East Farewell – The near record temperatures all over the state last week have brought many visitors to town. They are coming from the big cities to the east and west, like Philadelphia and Pittsburg. The somewhat cooler temperatures in East Farewell and especially around Lake Charles have been a siren song for many suffering through the heat wave in the cities. “I am booked for the rest of the summer,” said Mrs. Mallard, local boarding house owner, “I love the summers in this town. We are always a good 5 to 10 degrees cooler than the big cities and people just flock here when the temperatures get up there down there.”

The Lakefront Plaza with the very large manmade beach on beautiful Lake Charles is the main destination for the overheated travelers. The Fun Pier next door offers some fun for the children with the carrousel and tilt-a-whirl. The giant Ferris wheel offers a great view of the lake and town while supplying a refreshing breeze. Many people are staying for a week or two and the ones with summer homes have become local fixtures in town and around the lake on their docks and riding in their boats.

Summer will roll on and there is no more fitting description than the “Lazy, hazy days of summer” to describe East Farewell in the summer.

TRAVELERS CATCH ANGLERS

Riverview - The Travelers were able to extend their winning streak on Friday with a solid win over the Anglers, 5-2. Billy Green took the mound for the Travelers, replacing Danny Lane in the rotation due to Lane having a virus. Green threw a very respectable game, allowing only two runs on seven hits and four walks. The defense of the Travelers was strong as they turned two double plays and catcher Joey Brown was able to throw out a runner attempting to steal second in the seventh inning. The Anglers sent left hander, Jose Farmachella to the mound. He let in five runs, three of which came off a three run blast by Johnny Cloos in the sixth. He gave up a total of ten hits but only walked two. The Anglers did suffer from two errors, one of which let another run score. The game was played with a light rain falling but it was not strong enough to call for a halt.

The Travelers head up to Bear Creek where they will take on the Bears in a rare double header. This was brought about by a rain-out earlier in the season that caused this scheduling oddity. The first game begins on Saturday at 12:35 and the second game will follow.

15TH OLYMPIC GAMES OPEN – AMERICAN WINS JAVELIN – DEMOCRATIC CONVENTION OPENS – SHARY TALKS ABOUT FILM VS TV – STROCH TO HOST – MANNERS GONE – MENS HAIR TOO LONG – POP MUSIC  & TOP FREED HITS THIS WEEK

The Olympic Games officially open in Helsinki for the 15th Olympiad. The city was supposed to host the 1940 games, and then came the Russian attack in 1939. The games were supposed to move to Tokyo, then Japan disqualified itself by its unprovoked attack on Asia and the flame of the Olympic torch died out for eight years of war.

Cy Young - UCLA star, became the first American in history to win an Olympic Games javelin championship and posted a new record of 242ft, 0.79inches at the games in Helsinki.

The Democratic convention opened in Chicago. Gov Adlai E. Stevenson of Illinois and Sen. Paul Douglas of Illinois give opening addresses.

Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt got an ovation as she gave an address. She read from an undelivered speech by her late husband. It was a plea for Americans to dedicate themselves to making an abiding peace.

Dore Schary, head of production for Metro-Goldwyn Mayer, told an advertising club that television is here to stay. But he added, television has not been able to put on the screen “anything to match the giant entertainment offered by motion pictures.” Schary also stated that no one would want to watch television all the time any more than they would want to stay in a motion-picture theater all the time. MGM has a policy of not allowing its stars to appear on TV because “TV cameras and production would not do them justice.” Schary also told the audience he does not believe there are any Communists working in industry. “If they are, they are fooling the industry, the FBI and the House Un-American Activities Committee.”

Larry Storch became the fourth emcee of Dumont’s “Cavalcade of Stars.” Jackie Gleason, the last host, recently stepped down and will host his own show on CBS-TV, Saturday evenings beginning in the fall.

Alice Thompson - editor and publisher of Seventeen Magazine said when it comes to teens - clothes that would have been considered shocking “in my youth” are completely accepted today. “Manners have undergone a sea-change (if not an outright death by drowning!)”

Trends - Men’s haircuts are getting longer these days and the average guy doesn’t like to look like he’s had one.
