GUYS AND DOLLS PLAYS TO SOLD OUT CROWDS

East Farewell – The East Farewell Playhouse is currently presenting the extremely popular play “Guys & Dolls” This is a local production of the Broadway smash with an assortment of both local and national celebrities. This show was the most popular next to “A Christmas Carol” in last year’s schedule and its overwhelming success made for an easy decision for producer, Jeb Bernstein, to redo the musical. “We very briefly discussed whether to bring it back and it was an undisputed yes to bring it back,” said Bernstein during in an after show interview.
This year’s version stars Ray Shaw reprising his Broadway role as Sky Masterson along with local hero Phil O’Rourke as Nathan Detroit. The cast also includes local favorites, Natalie Mallard as Miss Adelaide and Sue Logan as Sister Sarah Brown. The music was supplied by the Playhouse’s guest band for this show, Gus Templeton’s Small Band. The scenery was on the minimal side but well placed pews for the Save-A-Soul Mission and interesting Cuban scenes along with simple street backdrops did not take away from the action.
The show has sold out every show and is expected to continue to sell out for the rest of the run which last until July 31st. It is not unusual to hear people humming “Luck be a Lady” on the streets of East Farewell. The Playhouse has become the new place to be seen in town and there always a line before show times and it is not unusual to see kids hanging by the stage doors waiting for the actors to come to get autographs.

“We are having a great time with this play and the turnout has been tremendous,” said O’Rourke after a show, “I’m just love my part as Nathan, he is really the heart of the show, I think, but Ray does a great job and the whole gang really makes this baby go. It is just a great time. I love it.”

TRAVELERS HOOKED BY ANGLERS

Riverview – The Travelers got netted on Saturday by a team that was surprising polished with a strong defense and a smooth offense. The Riverview Anglers hooked the Travelers 6-1 in a one sided victory that made the Travelers look a bit road weary. The Anglers tagged Travelers starter, the usually reliable, Joe Nagy, for three runs in the first and then in the third the rock solid Travelers defense crumbled when shortstop, Dale Dunham and catcher, Joey Brown committed costly errors allowing two more runs. The Anglers, Jerry Mack, added insult to injury by blasting Nagy for a solo homerun in the eighth.
The Travelers have been on the road for the last three weeks but that is no excuse so said team leader Johnny Cloos. “We looked slow and half asleep out there today, it was a disgrace. I apologize to all our fans, we are much better than that. I have to give the Anglers their due. They played a very strong game and did not make any mistakes, unlike us. ”
The Travelers did get on the board with a solo homerun in the seventh by Tony Dimero but that was too little too late. The game ended with a lopsided 6-1 score and the Travelers limped into the locker room. They finally come home next week when they take on the Cedar Creek Bulls in the Ball Park at 1:30 on Saturday.
