FUN PIER CONSTRUCTION COMPLETE
AND OPEN FOR FUN
East Farewell – “We have completed all the construction. All the
rides are open and everyone is welcome to come on down,” proclaimed owner and
top promoter Sam
Lendel. The construction Lendel was referring to was the completion of
several rides including a new Roller Coaster that soars almost forty feet high,
Bumper Cars, Kiddie rides and a Fun House with a mirror jungle. They all were added
to the Fun Pier after it was nearly destroyed last winter. An extra length of
pier was added and was filled with shops and dining areas. All the work was
completed in record time as Lendel oversaw the project with daily on-site
appearances.
The
Fun Pier has been a regional summer attraction for many years and has grown
every summer with either added rides or other amenities like shops or the
midway. This year the Roller Coaster
took the center stage. Built on a steel and wood reinforced frame the Coaster
tops out at thirty-eight feet and has a primary down slope of 78º. This makes the coaster
reach speeds up to 85 mph at its fastest speed. When matched with all the
twists and turns the ride is one minute of thrilling, scary fun. The Bumper Cars are an electric crash derby
contained in a 100 foot oval that is gives many kids their first chance to
drive a vehicle that does not have pedals.
The Fun House is just goofy with a deceiving mirror jungle at the end.
Many enter but few exit without bumping into themselves there. The Kiddie Ride
section has a nifty little teacup ride, a motorboat ride, a motorcycle ride and
a miniature carousel. All the rides are
especially designed for children under the age of eight and offer a great
adventure for the very young.
All the new rides add some more excitement to the already
famous and historic rides like the Ferris wheel that majestically towers over
Lake Charles and the historic carousel that has been spinning on the Pier since
it opened in the 1920’s. Many folks have
tried for the brass ring and took in the breath taking view of the Lake and
this summer is not an exception, with the bigger and brighter Pier the folks
are flocking to it every night. Crowds have been very large so far this summer
in spite of the construction. Now that the building is finished and the area is
clear of safety barricades even larger crowds are expected. The Pier is open every day and until 9:00PM
on week nights and 11:00PM on Friday and Saturday nights. The wonderful weather
has surely contributed to the large turnout but the new rides and shops are
certainly going to add happy visitors to the Pier.

TRAVELERS STRUGGLE AGAINST EXPLORERS
East Farewell – Joe Trane lived up to his nickname “Freight” as
he hauled his Explorers past the stationary Travelers on Saturday, 5-1. The
Explorers were tied with the Travelers in the standings until Saturday when
Freight Trane came to town and was able to keep the Travelers off the
scoreboard until the ninth when they were able to score one off two hits. The Travelers could only manage four hits in
the entire game while the Explorers were able to connect with 12 hits off Joey
Alfred.
Both side were
quite, going scoreless in the first three innings but then the Explorers opened
up the game with a four run fourth with double by Watkins, a single by Delong,
a run scoring single by Getz and then a long home run by their slugger Bobby “Hammer”
Taxen. Taxen leads the league in home runs with 15 at the half way mark of the
season. The fourth inning would have been enough but the Explorers were able to
score one more in the eight. It wasn’t
until the ninth that the Travelers were able to do any damage to Trane’s very
strong outing. Bobby Watson was able to rope a double and Johnny Cloos was able
to connect with a single, scoring Watson. That was it for the Travelers.
The Travelers
will try to get some offense back when they play the Riverview Anglers at the
park next Saturday. The game begins at 1:30PM.
